stanleyReader comment on item: Turkey Out of NATO: Other Voices Submitted by trans-parere (Canada), Feb 1, 2012 at 22:27 We can not "push" Turkey in a direction they are working towards. What many are suggesting is that we give up our own democratic and human rights values. To make such accommodations on our part so that Turkey would feel more at home among this new "progressive" coalition of European countries and N. America with out having to alter the direction of their political and economic directions. That attitude of appeasement has never worked. If a people or nation holds individual rights and freedoms as universal human values; then they have a duty to the world to stand tall and defend that line in the sand. Any people or nation who dares suggest that a nations defense of the universality of individual rights and freedoms drove them into the arms of the Islamist are transparent liars preying on the sympathy of the fools who don't have the intestinal fortitude to take their place on the wall to defend those values. Opportunist who would rather sell themselves and whatever values they do hold piecemeal for the sake of being eaten last crap. This Islamism that has it's grip on the Muslim world can and will only be defeated by the staunch defense of individual rights and freedoms and democratic values. The sooner the Islamic nations get on board the better for the whole world BUT, it is the work they must do for themselves and they must eventually unite against their extremists if they are ever to be free people. Imagine how the Iranian [or any other Muslim] longing for democratic rule must feel knowing that there are nations willing to compromise on individual rights and freedom to appease those nations like Turkey who profit through Islamic extremism and terrorism support. We can not purchase the Muslims freedom for them. We have spent the last 70 years buying Palestinian good will and enriching that terrorist organization to our own detriment. Had we responded in the early days actually creating a two State solution and standing up against the Arab threats against democratic intervention we would never have come to this historical cluter-f--- that is the Pal/Israeli/Pan Arab continuous exercise in futility. The ramifications of all foreign policy lay in not keeping faith with ones values. Nations or people have damn little credibility separate from their defense of the individual. Authoritarian governments are the dinosaurs of human political evolution. Universal human rights. Individual rights and freedoms in law is the necessary meteor impact to effect the end to authoritarian rule. The Muslim is experiencing their "dark age" in the 21st century. Let's hope it doesn't last 400 years.
