We chose the wrong countryReader comment on item: Embassy Baghdad in Decline Submitted by ginger (United States), Feb 10, 2012 at 01:51 It is still to this day amazing that the US, led by George W. Bush, could have picked Iraq as the country to invade. Why did it not pick the true danger to US and the whole world; namely, Iran. But as supportive of Israel as he was, and as well informed we presume he was, he went ahead and chose Iraq, a country which had not threatened the US nor were we able to identify any weapons of mass destruction at the point of invasion Part of this huge blunder was no doubt due to the publication of the National Intelligence Estimate (NEA) which declared without solid evidence that Iran had suspended its nuclear program and it was not developing a nuclear capability, much less a nuclear weapon. Let us not forget that Iraq's dictator, had threatened the life of President Bush's father which might have had some influence over the decision to invade Iraq. Anybody's guess. So we invaded Iraq and spent nine long years with a huge loss of American lives and American treasure. But the irony is that we just recently have departed from Iraq because, it is claimed, the public is tired of the war leading nowhere. And so leaving is the only option left. Whether that is a sound argument I would doubt. However, without saying it, we have been defeated and left probably a bigger problem than we had when we went in. Why? Because Shiite Iraq is now coming under the influence of Shiite Iran, if not already in Iran's sphere of influence. So all this time, effort and money went to empower Iran who is developing a nuclear capability which one day may choose to attack the United States. How could we have done such a bad job in judgement, it is truly mind-boggling. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
