Ironically - The Previous Comment Connecting Sharia to SlaveryReader comment on item: Count Palestine Refugees? Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), Jun 4, 2012 at 13:03 Slavery, of any kind, is an aberration of humanity; that of the idea that any person 'owning' the life of another person to do with as an owner might have a mind to should be considered diabolical at its very source. This is as applicable to the slave trade that hangs about America's history as it does when the Pharaoh's did it to the Hebrews in Egypt, and every society before or since. This applies to all who think slavery is acceptable in any form. But, let us make a distinction between slavery and servitude; for there is a difference. Slavery compels without a choice; being a voluntary servant infers a different relationship. Slavery under Islam is no different than the slavery once prevalent in America. In either case, release was not a choice of the indentured, but a decision of those who held those lives in jeopardy. Slaves released in either case were still colored with the history of their captivity, some even physically marked for life. Now, in the previous exchange, we read of the Islamic Prophet's teaching of (paraphrase) forgiving 70 times before punishing, an aberration of the true teaching of Jesus Christ over six hundred years before, where the Jewish Messiah said that if forgiveness is to be true, it is complete and endless. We would have to presume that the Islamic Prophet took what Jesus Christ said and adapted it to fit the times of the Islamic realm where slavery was still an acceptable practice. In America, while slavery was an accepted practice for some, there were those who saw it as an expression of man's inhumanity to man; that the precept of the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal did not set well with those who still owned slaves for the expedience of their pride. They fought to retain their ownership in the United States Constitution, a division of ideologies that remained in contention until the War Between the States, the ghosts of which remain to this day. Some in this forum will make an allegation that slavery is still considered practical in the Middle East; and by some observances, this is likely true in many places in the region with one notable exception: modern Israel does not practice slavery, no matter the implications made toward the 'Palestinian' plight. A better example of slavery might be construed from what is happening to the disenfranchised citizens of Syria being pummeled into submission or to oblivion. Given the choice, Israel would live in peace, a situation currently difficult to practice while ducking the rocket fire from places that would subjugate Israel if they could. But ask the 'Palestinian' living peacefully under Israeli rule: are they slaves to the Israelis; or are they slaves to the mentality that hatred for the sake of hatred as practiced by the rocketeers of Gaza (et al) is a better master to live by? Is not the source of slavery a practice of hatred toward another? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
