Not NecessarilyReader comment on item: Chuck Hagel at Defense? Submitted by Alex (United States), Feb 3, 2013 at 12:24 "Odd that CUFI is out there swinging and theAmerican Israel Public Affairs Committee is silent." Not necessarily. In his book, "Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present," current Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, discusses instances where American Christian missionaries to the Middle East were more fervent in urging a Jewish return to Israel than were American Jews willing to make such a move. I see the current pattern of Christian versus Jewish pro-Israel activists making comments on the nomination of Chuck Hagel to the Secretary of Defense post through this lens. I even had the chance to ask Ambassador Oren if he agreed with my application of the examples he cited at a recent event where I attended, but I chickened out at the last minute. What does another eminent historian, Dr. Pipes, think of my interpretation? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: Christian Zionists were certainly more avid than some Jews but over all, it was the Jews who made Zionism a success.
