I don't infer too muchReader comment on item: Muslims Turn away from Islamism Submitted by Kyle F (United States), Jul 15, 2014 at 19:47 I don't know, I kind of see Islam as analogous to communism. Hypothetically speaking, if you could have freely polled average citizens in the Soviet Union or PRC during the height of the cold war---citizens who self-identified as communists-----I'm sure many of them were opposed to the most brutal methods of repression that their government employed in the name of communism. But it's quite a leap of logic to then assume that those same citizens would make any logical connection between the tenets of communism and the repression that ideology engendered, and that they were prepared to thus forego communism. There were many varieties of communism in the 20th century, in many different countries, and some were more benign than others. But the basic tenets of communism prevented virtually all of them from peacefully evolving into liberal democracies. I believe Islam is similar, except that it has a more profound hold on its believers than communism did.
