Good news, or merely Sisyphean?Reader comment on item: Muslims Turn away from Islamism Submitted by Ron Thompson (United States), Jul 16, 2014 at 17:20 I'm not sure these poll results means anything other than those polled don't want this 'version' of Islam imposed on them. I note that the population of Mosul had plenty of opportunity to view ISIS nearby in northern Syria, but welcomed the group with open arms when they arrived. Any second thoughts only came later. If it is true, as I believe, that 'Islamism' is inherent in Islam, indeed is its logical end result, then people may reject it for awhile, but if Islam retains their basic allegiance, then it's virulent manifestations will only come back again later on. This is additionally true if the West condemns "violent extremism" or "militant Islam", but remains careful to never expressly criticize Islam itself. 'Islamism' may wane, but if the religion remains untouched and immune to confrontation and criticism, especially by non-Muslims and shapers of World opinion, then it will only continue to incubate and nourish the return of ... 'Islamism', which has happened time and again down through the weary centuries of its existence.
