Left, Right, Religion, Trump and the MediaReader comment on item: MEF's Surprising Straw Poll on Trump Submitted by Michael S. (United States), Apr 15, 2016 at 10:37 Hi, Doug. You said, "I can easily be thoroughly wrong... but something smells to high heaven and in the number of alternative realities coming out of the current situation none of them stand to benefit the American public." I'm glad you added that caveat; because if something smells to high heaven, God will smell it and do something about it. Perhaps that "something" is Donald Trump. I don't believe the ditzy left-wing news anchors saw him coming. I think they are genuinely clueless about what normal Americans think and feel, as is David Brooks, PBS's Center-Left talking head who is their token "Right-winger". As for Ted Cruz, let me bore everyone here, with some Bible-ese. My wife and I have some close friends, who are Cruz supporters and are aghast at the prospect of a true Christian voting for Trump. I don't agree with them, a substantial number of Evangelical and "Born-Again" Christians don't agree with them (Trump's greatest victories so far have been in the Bible Belt); and unless God sovereignly moves voters to vote for Cruz in July or November, I don't think most of the electorate agrees with them. Cruz is a megachurch Baptist. Her's a picture of the church he goes to, Houston First Baptist: http://s3-media1.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/rD8DA9IBTRz4RJaPQJ-ugA/o.jpg It seems like a good place to learn the latest Christian fashions, and to learn in detail, whether or not the man in front of you got his neck shaved recently at the barber's. It also seems to be a place where I couldn't stay awake through the sermon without the help of some sort of energy drink. Do I sound like I don't like those places? You're right. I'm a Born-Again Christian, having been brought up Catholic like Ted; so I suppose I should be more sympathetic with him and his. I'm not Donald Trump's pastor, at one point was Norman Vincent Peale, himself, in the flesh! and Donald apparantly has nothing bad to say about the man who authored "The Power of Positive Thinking". I might add, at this point, that "Positive Thinkers" rate right down in my book with "What a lovely back of the neck you have" Christians. The Donald has often been given Bibles by friends, probably with the idea that he should read them. Instead, he keeps them unblemished, and puts them in very nice places. On the Democrat side, I haven't got a clue. Bill Clinton is Super-Conservative Southern Baptist, Hillary is Super-LIberal United Methodist, and Monica Lewinsky is Jewish. I guess they have all bases covered. Do I sound unimpressed by religious credentials for the person who might become our President? Let me put it this way: Jesus was a Jew; but I picture him as not after the order of Monica; nor was his politics anything like Bernie Sanders'. He said we should pay taxes, and not complain about it. Aaargh! That's a hard one! I don't mind the AMOUNT of taxes I have to pay; but I hate and fear the amount of paperwork needed to file them. I should be working on them right not, April 15; I have until Monday. Jesus, please give me the gumption to file my taxes! Amen. Where was I? Candidates, religion. Regardness of religion, I don't trust any of the Clintons any farther than I can throw them (which has become a short distance since I retired). I would vote for Cruz, but not because I like the way his barber shaves his neck; and I would vote for Trump, because he seems to be a man with similar social graces to my own. The media? I wouldn't vote for any of them, Left or Right. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
