1961 a strange reversal of 1941Reader comment on item: The Mundane Origins of Germany's Huge Turkish Population Submitted by myth (Germany), Nov 10, 2016 at 04:17 Modern German history tells a story of extremes. Let me compare the recruitment of Turkish workers 1961 with the invasion into the Soviet Union in 1941. In 1941 over a million of German soldiers entered the Soviet Union. Starting 1961 millions of Turks entered Germany. 1941 was a quick rush, indeed a hostile invasion. The Turks however came slowly over a period of decades on invitation not not by invasion. In 1941 Germany kept industry going with forced labor. 1961 we paid wages. The Nazi-government's motivation was, among others, the paranoia of seeking "Lebensraum im Osten"/"Living space in the East". 1961 we offered "living space in the West" to Turkey. While the Wehrmacht killed tens of millions in the Soviet Union, West Germany saw the Turks bring their families over and rise in numbers. In this odd way 1961 is a strange reversal of 1941.
