People with choice, chose wiselyReader comment on item: Will Islam Survive Islamism? Submitted by Basat TAYFUN (Turkey), Nov 16, 2021 at 04:40 Islamism is a black hole for faith, even Sunnis. It is all about materialism and chauvinism. They can do no wrong, everything they do is in the name of Allah/God, even if it means trampling the Quran and common decency in favor of suspect hadiths, fatwahs, etc. and outright nonsense. But, Islamism has been around a long time and their goals, strategies and mentality have really not changed, only repackaged and modernized/upgraded. They will do anything to get ahead in this world and will use God's good name (and His book(s)) to shield themselves from all manner of accountability. If they waste trillions and the economy tanks, it is the enemies of Sunni Islam that are responsible. If there is a massive train accident or a building collapses at the weakest earthquake, it was God's will, not corruption or incompetence that allowed shoddy construction. Sincere people -- with faith or not -- are used to this. They have been seeing it for centuries and are now more aware in this Age of The Internet and have access to original text and education in their mother tongues. What they are probably not used to is the degree of disparity they find themselves in. For example, Erdogan (Turkey/AKP) has not changed. He is just more powerful and thus, able to carry on more openly. If the economy had been what it was several years ago or if Erdogan had pursued better relations with the EU (giving Turkey citizens access to Europe), I doubt this article would have been relevant or particularly interesting. Muslims, nominally or practicing, would have carried on as before, with the occasional conversion to Christianity, atheism, etc. There would be nothing to write home about.
