America the Unpopular - So be it.Reader comment on item: America the Unpopular Submitted by Kent McDonald (United States), Nov 6, 2003 at 12:23 The President of the United States is required by the US Constitution to defend America from its enemies both foreign and domestic. Any President who worries more about what the French, or Turks, or Saudis think than than he worries about the security of America doesn't deserve the job. Indeed, he is betraying America if this priority is turned on its head with the shifting of every domestic or international political wind. If the President FAILS at protecting America from its enemies, he is a FAILURE. Period. That being a given...seeking consensus when taking action can be a good thing...but only if waiting for a vote from friends and neighbors doesn't get in the way of warding off disaster. We ALL know that terrorist don't announce in advance which date they will strike or where. Waiting til they strike is no longer an option in this nuclear age. The stakes are simply too great.Appeasement did nothing to deter Hitler, it will do nothing to deter enemies in the 21st century. President Bush was not elected to be a popular world leader. He was elected to be the President of the United States. His FIRST duty; his FIRST priority, should be and IS American interests. I wouldn't have it any other way.
