to Kenn: on American interestsReader comment on item: America the Unpopular Submitted by Anubhav Singh (India), Aug 18, 2006 at 03:23 "..His FIRST duty; his FIRST priority, should be and IS American interests..." I think there is a serious disconnect between American people and American Govt and its perception of interests. As an Indian who has studied and lived in US, I think that somehow American society which is easily the most progressive society on the planet does not convey its value systems in its Government's outlooks. American govt needs to scale down its involvement in world affairs in certain places. one example is trying to encircle Russia and China. Another case is maintaining strategic partnerships with countries like Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi. I hope Iraq war experiences cause them to realign and re-define their 'interests'. China is epanding its influence in Central Asia without causing any negative vibes. While China is clearly not 'like' America, it is also not anti-American like Communist Soviet Union. Same is true about current Russia. I am not sure what common ground does US find with Saudi and Pakistan. They are the key financiers and executioners of Islamic terrorism, and because of this India faces problems with American policies. If oil really dictates foreign policy then I think engaging Venezuela would have been much prudent. why antagonize everyone everywhere. Japan and Germany are most respected nations because of their non-involvement. are they suffering any serious dent in their 'interests' on the world arena? doesnt seem like it.
