ScholarshipReader comment on item: America the Unpopular Submitted by Arlinda DeAngelis (United States), Nov 9, 2003 at 03:00 Dr. Pipes, perhaps the greatest scholar of our day, is absolutely correct. There is and always will be the European whine. The United States is forever encroaching on the old and forgotten French, German and Russian ideas of imperialism. Although the United States permanently ended their imperialism, to their benefit, they have not forgotten their old ways of ruling and rearranging the world. In some ways they still act as imperial powers, forging secret alliances for whatever strange reasons seem in their immediate national interests. Only Spain and Italy, along with the emerging democratic nations of Eastern Europe have come to grips with modern democracy. They have, of course, learned the hard way. Being a colony does have its lessons. Churchill once said that Britain must always remain close to the United States. Israel and Great Britain understand the significance of remaining allied to the US and, they alone understand the modern world and that which threatens it. The Democrats do, indeed, need a reality check. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
