I've taken your advice about reading different translations (and the urtexten) many times over the course of life. And, while I think that everyone loving their neighbor as himself would be great for the world's health, I doubt that humans are good enough to do that. Loving one's neighbor is something that people always pay lip service to, but never really practice. The common verbal honoring of Jesus' selection of the loving God and neighbor texts from the Torah to summarize the moral law coupled with the difficulties most mortals have in following his advice is proof enough to me that the natural man is, as Paul said, "dead in sin".

It is also why I think that the post-Christian religions of 19th-20th century Western humanitarianism and 7th century Islam, both of which deny the doctrine of original sin are hopelessly naive about human nature and too flippant bout the evils besetting the world.
