Reason for U.S.-Israeli alliance

Reasons for the cooperative relationship between America and Israel are probably the same now as they were 60 years ago: powerful Jewish lobby, common culture with European roots, similarity of basic religious beliefs, large contingents of Jewish people who are in respected professions and have contacts throughout West, and, perhaps, an American urge to root for the underdog country surrounded by all those huge enemies.

I think this is OK as long as Americans don't forget that Israel and the USA are two different countries, so that while considerable mutual interest exists, their national interests are not identical.
