Myopic Politicians

The level of politics and politicians has gone low worldwide. Politicians of today hardly bother about long term implications of any stand they take on any issue. All they are worried about is the next election. The ruling party in India recently came up with the idea of reservations for Muslims in Government jobs to enhance the possibility of its victory in one of the state assembly elections held in March. None of the political parties opposed the idea. The BJP, which is supposed to be the Indian equivalent of Conservative Party of Britain and Republican party of India said that they were not opposed to the idea, but ....... The result is that a constitutional amendment bill to provide reservations to Muslims is just round the corner. The party which won the election was the one which said it favored reservation of the biggest chunk for Muslims.

Now conceding similar demands of the Muslims has already resulted in division of the country, and yet the politicians are not bothered about such consequences. They are simply too far away for them. In fact they many be up to 15 years away!

In USA, the Government is faced with the question of whether to go with Iran or Israel; taking a neutral position being as good as going with Iran. The decision to let Israel defend itself against the nuclear threat from Iran and other country which Iran will proliferate the technology to, the has a long term implication for USA, but it has some short term benefits. Nobody is surprised by the short term vision ruling the roost.
