Advocating a Betrayal of Conservatism?Reader comment on item: Islam and Islamism in the Modern World Submitted by Ali Baba (United States), Feb 5, 2013 at 16:25 Support for "liberals" in the Muslim world from Western conservatives seems nonsensical and ultimately defeatist in my opinion. At the very least, it appears as a hypocritical betrayal of core values. This is because traditional Islamic values are actually just modernized Judeo-Christian values, given that Islam is several centuries newer. Embracing those values at home in the US, while advocating for Leftism in Islamic countries is clever, but has less chance of succeeding than convincing the Nazi party to adopt zionist ideologies. I know many American Muslims, ranging from the very devout to the moderately devout to the secular areligious. The secular areligious tend to be pure humanists. They espouse such Leftist ideals as freedom of (and from) religion, free speech, universal health care, strict gun control, abortion, gay marriage, top-heavy taxation, and are fanatical Obama supporters. More relevant to this forum, they voiced vehement opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, condemn torture in all forms whether its called "extraordinary rendition" or "enhanced interrogation techniques", recognize and condemn Islamophobia, support the immediate closure of Gitmo, and believe that both Israel and the Palestinian Authority are equally culpable in the the ME conflict. If the conservative strategy is support these kinds of Muslims, the towel might as well be thrown in, IMO. The moderately practicing Muslim shares all the same views, except that they abstain from alcohol and attend the mosque on Fridays. The only difference they have with the seculars is that they may or may not be pro-choice, and are usually against gay marriage. Thus they are actually closer to the conservative movement, albeit marginally. The majority of Muslims in organizations like CAIR fall under this category. Submitting....
