Europe still has primary teethReader comment on item: The Silver Lining of Obama's Weak America Submitted by myth (Germany), Nov 12, 2013 at 09:03 This argumentation repeats an observation made earlier. The more the US neglects Israel, the more the Israeli themselves will act wisely and with respect to their interests. The continental European NATO allies however lack one capacitiy that Israel does have. Europe shies away from military deterrence. Europe cannot stop the "catastrophe" of a nuclear armed Iran by means of destroying the facilities. Germany certainly has the economic potential to raise the military budget ( I do not use the word defense here ) yet it stays passive. Germany's position in the Middle East is defined by its relationship with Israel which is as unique as Israel's relationship with the US. That relationship makes Germany the exceptional country in Europe. Germany is bound to Israel but without any colonial heritage in the Middle East. In other words, the red lines for Germany are drawn and immutable. Regardless of this clarity the German government has never denounced Iran as The antisemitic threat to Israel. On the other hand, Germany adds to Israel's deterrent capabilities with submarines as a matter of Realpolitik. Then again, public debate has recently declared the NSA the enemy, not the terrorists, not a word about Iran. Germany has certainly lost orientation and priority. I am afraid, military Europe still has primary teeth and little resolve. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
