There Is No IronyReader comment on item: The Silver Lining of Obama's Weak America Submitted by Tom Dundee (United States), Nov 24, 2013 at 15:15 There is no irony with regards to Iran. The Soviet Union moved into northern Iran at the end of WWII and planned on staying there, until they took the southern half. I would imagine with the same thoughts as in Vietnam and Korea. The US and Britain forced the Soviets out and they kept trying to get back in there. Moggesh, a Communist, had killed off his opposition and of course he won his election. The Shah removed him from office as was within his authority as the monarch. and now the US and Britain forced him out. The Soviet goal was a warm water naval base/seaport, which had been the goal of the Russians for at least 400 years. Soviet agents and operatives had moved into Afghanistan and when that failed they invaded in 1979. Again the goal was the Indian Ocean, though they would have had a tough time getting through Pakistan had they succeeded in Afghanistan. This would have given the Soviets control of all sea going traffic in the Indian Ocean and most of the world did not need that. The real goal of the Soviets in Vietnam was the Straits of Malacca and sealing that Strait would have been no problem. They had a ways to go to get there, but it would have worked had Thailand fallen, which was going to happen according to conventional wisdom of the time. As far as Moggesh at the time, the Allatoyah Khemenie was already in exile unless he had been recently been allowed back in, but he was already in exile in the early 1940s, unless it was the Soviets that had ran him out of there. With the Soviets in charge, Khomenei would never have gotten back in because the Commies would never has listened to Carter, like the Shah did.
