Who is the "police detective, retired?"

Did you know that of the (by my count) 229 words in your otherwise excellent comment, over half of them (116) consisted of a single sentence? Breath, man!

Another question, when you wrote,

Who is the "Austrialian police detective, retired?". It would help posterity a great deal to know the name of this authority, perhaps with a link?
