He portrays Putin as a leader much wiser than Obama who would even come to Obama's rescue:

"In fact, Putin helped President Barack Obama avoid an intervention which the U.S. president did not want and which would have probably made things worse for the United States in the Middle East and elsewhere."

It seems that the reputation lost by the US transferred to Russia and produces its political success.
