You assume however that the current circumstances are and will be static. In the fifties despite what most think (I was growing up then ) the US had its share of economic problems. Same in the 80's Eventually we come out of these economic periods. What has changed and maybe for good is the will of the people. Bush tried as Obama to have wars with no commitment to actually winning them. They were a far cry from FDR's unconditional surrender. Bottom line is if you decide to go to war you throw everything and the kitchen sink at it. Imagine the outcome if we had done that in Afghanistan. If Politicians here would like to once again win their wars they need to reinstitute a draft and make people have some skin in the game. Without that you're just killing our troops for no result.
