For the life of me, I don't know how one can expect to separate Islam from what it has always been - Muhammad who exemplified the quintessential Muslim - and he being exactly what Mr. Pipes describes Islamism to be.
Any moderately inclined Muslim will have to absolutely gut anything and everything at all that is foundational to Islam if they expect to fly this kind of Muslim ship. Again, one cannot escape from the facts of Muhammad's life and that BEING the foundation.
If you want a duck, you can't take away its quack or waddle. Islam has no substance (whether we like that substance or not is irrelevant) without Muhammad and his "Islamism" way of life.
