Merkel and many other of the EU leaders are globalists with the attendant globalist mentality in tow. Barack Obama was also a globalist. It's amusing that so many people ask "why" these people do what they do when a little education in the OWG agendas would wipe away all questions. Of course if one disbelieves in their existence and/or agendas, then one will continue to be befuddled.

Merkel's facilitating the move of well over a million Muslims into her country doesn't puzzle me at all.
