Merkel seemed to mean what you took her words to mean

After all, she did also add that you could read a book to understand christian paintings, thus preserving your christian heritage. This was not about opposition, but about having the country adopt muslim culture while the individual may read books and preserve and deepen his own christian heritage. It is hardly a satisfactory answer.
