Merkel's East-German impulse

Merkel's advice to go visit a church more often strikes me as an East-German impulse. Certainly she is the daughter of a protestant theologian. She also follows the East German tradition of retreating to the church in times of political discomfort. Later one would come out and declare this retreat as opposition. In the eyes of East-Germans this is how they, not the West, not the Soviets, ended socialism in 1990.
