Correct However the Qur'an does not tell us much so we have to turn to the writings by al-Mufasereen and the earliest extant Tafsir is al-Tabari (Allah's editor in-chief) and al-Tabari says the subject of the verse are:

(من الذين أوتوا الكتاب)، وهم اليهود والنصارَى.

Or (Fight) those that were given the book) and they are the Jews and al-Nasara (read as Christians)

So it is in black and white that it is declaration of war against the Jews and al-Nasara (Christians)

And yes later on al-Majus or Zoroastrians and even Hindus and Buddhists and al-Sabi'een of Iraq were added to the list

Very true and I suspect most Muslims have no clue and notice that Q2:40 and Q2:47 (two Variant Traditions) Allah tells his followers that the Jews are his favorite people

But most amazing is Q5:21 and Q5:22 and here is Q5:21 from an old post of mine

ياقوم ادخلوا الارض المقدسة التي كتب الله لكم

Or O people (the Jewish people and these are Moses' words) enter the holy land which Allah assigned to you

So it says

1. That Allah assigned a holy land for the Jewish people

2. He is saying that they can enter such land and it belongs to them

3. But notice the author does not tell us where is this holy land

Well the ulama were ready to help and let us see what al-Tabari is saying about this disaster

And here is what al-Tabari tells us that this holy land assigned by Allah to the Jews or الارض كتبها الله لبنى اسراءيل is

1. الطور وماحوله or al-Tur (read this as Mount Sinai and what is around it ie: the Sinai

2. قال اخارون هو الشام or other said it is al-Sham read this as Syria and Lebanon

3. هي ارض اريحاء or it is the land of Jericho (Ariha in Syriac and Arabic)

4. دمشق وفلسطين وبعض الاردن or Damascus and PALESTINE and parts of Jordan

It is all in black and white Palestine belongs as per Allah to the Jewish people also Damascus and Jordan

5. الارض بين الفرات وعريش مصر or the land between the Euphrates and the town of al-Arish in Egypt!

وَيَعْنِي بِقَوْلِهِ : { الَّتِي كَتَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ } الَّتِي أَثْبَتَ فِي اللَّوْح الْمَحْفُوظ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ مَسَاكِن , وَمَنَازِل دُون الْجَبَابِرَة الَّتِي فِيهَا . فَإِنْ قَالَ قَائِل : فَكَيْفَ قَالَ : { الَّتِي كَتَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ } , وَقَدْ عَلِمْت أَنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَدْخُلُوهَا بِقَوْلِهِ : { فَإِنَّهَا مُحَرَّمَة عَلَيْهِمْ } ؟ فَكَيْفَ يَكُون مُثْبَتًا فِي اللَّوْح الْمَحْفُوظ أَنَّهَا مَسَاكِن لَهُمْ , وَمُحَرَّمًا عَلَيْهِمْ سُكْنَاهَا ؟ قِيلَ : إِنَّهَا كُتِبَتْ لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيل دَارًا وَمَسَاكِن , وَقَدْ سَكَنُوهَا وَنَزَلُوهَا , وَصَارَتْ لَهُمْ كَمَا قَالَ اللَّه جَلَّ وَعَزَّ . وَإِنَّمَا قَالَ لَهُمْ مُوسَى : { اُدْخُلُوا الْأَرْض الْمُقَدَّسَة الَّتِي كَتَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ } يَعْنِي بِهَا : كَتَبَهَا اللَّه لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيل - وَكَانَ الَّذِينَ أَمَرَهُمْ مُوسَى بِدُخُولِهَا مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيل - وَلَمْ يَعْنِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ اللَّه تَعَالَى ذِكْره كَتَبَهَا لِلَّذِينَ أَمَرَهُمْ بِدُخُولِهَا بِأَعْيَانِهِمْ , وَلَوْ قَالَ قَائِل : قَدْ كَانَتْ مَكْتُوبَة لِبَعْضِهِمْ , وَلِخَاصٍّ مِنْهُمْ , فَأَخْرَجَ الْكَلَام عَلَى الْعُمُوم وَالْمُرَاد مِنْهُ الْخَاصّ , إِذْ كَانَ يُوشَع وَكَالِب قَدْ دَخَلَا , وَكَانَا مِمَّنْ خُوطِبَ بِهَذَا الْقَوْل , كَانَ أَيْضًا وَجْهًا صَحِيحًا . وَبِنَحْوِ الَّذِي قُلْنَا فِي ذَلِكَ قَالَ اِبْن إِسْحَاق . 9093 - حَدَّثَنَا اِبْن حُمَيْد , قَالَ : ثنا سَلَمَة عَنْ مُحَمَّد بْن إِسْحَاق : { الَّتِي كَتَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ } الَّتِي وَهَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ . وَكَانَ السُّدِّيّ يَقُول : مَعْنَى " كَتَبَ " فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِع بِمَعْنَى " أَمَرَ " . 9094 - حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ مُوسَى بْن هَارُون , قَالَ : ثنا عَمْرو بْن حَمَّاد , قَالَ : ثنا أَسْبَاط , عَنْ السُّدِّيّ : { اُدْخُلُوا الْأَرْض الْمُقَدَّسَة الَّتِي كَتَبَ اللَّه لَكُمْ } الَّتِي أَمَرَكُمْ اللَّه بِهَا .

And here al-Tabari tells us that the promised land that belongs to the Jews as per Allah one would find it in Alllah's al-lawh al-mahfuz aka Allah's little tablet in his heaven!

Therefore, Allah is saying that Palestine and Syria and Jordan and Lebanon and the Sinai and the land from the Euphrates to the town of al-Arish in Egypt indeed belong to the Jews"

Very interesting indeed

Now if we read the rest of Q5:21 this is what it says:

وَلَا تَرْتَدُّوا عَلَىٰ أَدْبَارِكُمْ فَتَنقَلِبُوا خَاسِرِينَ

Or Do not turn around (notice that Adbarikum means your rear ends) and you become losers

It is very clear that Allah is saying to the Jews Go and get the holy land

Now Q5:22 says

قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ إِنَّ فِيهَا قَوْمًا جَبَّارِينَ وَإِنَّا لَن نَّدْخُلَهَا حَتَّىٰ يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهَا فَإِن يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهَا فَإِنَّا دَاخِلُونَ

Or They (The Jews) said to Moses: There are strong people in it (The Holy Land) and we will not enter it until they leave it and when they leave we will enter it

It is very clear that Allah is telling the Jews to expel those al-Qawm al-Jabbareen from the Holy Land! I can only read it as: Allah is a Zionist and does not like the Palestinians

The real question is: How many Muslims know about Q5:21-22? And why is the later hate against the Jews in the Qur'an?

I can only conclude that Allah is a poor theologian
