Sufis are the moderates of IslamReader comment on item: Scholarship about Islam in America Submitted by Max (United States), Sep 8, 2005 at 17:48 In response to the gentleman's comments about moderate Islam not existing, the Sufis are, in fact, the moderates of Islam and, unfortunately, aren't the majority like the Sunnis. If a moderate Sunni exists, they aren't truly following the Qur'an. A true follower of the Qur'an seeks to be ruled by Muslim law and if they live in a place where they are the minority, they strive to make the country follow Muslim law. Yes, Muslims will allow non-believers or People of the Book to live amongst them but they are subjected to a special tax to do so. In essence, if you have a rigid follower of the Qur'an, then you have a radical bent on jihad (struggle) vs. everyone else. The Founding Fathers of the USA could never have envisioned such a religion bent on overthrowing the government while taking advantage of its rights of freedom of religion.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
