Populism and isolationismReader comment on item: Why I Am Not a Populist Submitted by Ingmar (Italy), Jan 6, 2020 at 14:33 But the problem are the easy slogans, isolationism, for example, it turned out, as expected, that Trumps is not isolationist in term of minding one's own business, just isolating US's interest and use all leverage, threats well beyond the free market frame, yet arguing against socialism (actually simply moderate soc dem and regulated free market) for regulating market. Such leverage is, probably not limided to, tariffs, penalties and not just to make american buy american, but to make European buy America as well, in spite of free market preference. There's a zero sum frame, maximize export and minimize import using all means, even against allies becaues "they should respect the deal", which is pretty much unidirectional and a justification to the audience. Threatening sanctions if europeans introduce web tax, in order to protect Amazon because it's american and so much for anti establishment and anti multinationals.
