Question for Dr. Pipes regarding Green zone in BaghdadReader comment on item: Tempering Ambitions [in Iraq] Submitted by American Muslim (United States), Dec 3, 2006 at 00:58 Dear Dr. Pipes, I am an avid reader of your essays. Thank you for great work. My question and comment is: "Why don't we get out of that cocoon called Green zone?" No I don't mean we should abandon the green zone. My issue is with us getting stuck in it. Why haven't we been able to expand it? Let's get 5 mile belt that circles the green zone. Call it purple zone. And run more concentric zone with different colors until the whole of Baghdad and its immediate suburbs are covered. Then slowly and delicately move out of green zone to make each successive zone as safe as possible. This will be the style of rule Iraqis are familiar with. And they will respect and appreciate Americans. I am sure Sadr will cry and protest when one of these extended zones covers his neighborhood. Do not listen to him or any other Iraqi leader. These guys have no idea how to keep peace. It is time to use American innovation mixed with Middle Eastern style to keep order in the society. We can bring peace in and around Baghdad in 3 months. Iraqi people badly want action towards semblance of peace. These "Gahwa Meetings" (Middle Eastern Tea cup gathering) between Bush administration and Arabs are not going to help much. Thank you. Daniel Pipes replies: Interesting idea, but I approach it the opposite way, wanting to turn security over to the Iraqis and leave the Green Zone, and especially the embassy within it. (On the latter, see my blog, "The Largest Embassy Ever Run by any Country". Reader comments (46) on this item
