Mr. Palestine articleReader comment on item: Mr. Palestine? Submitted by Barbara (United States), Nov 26, 2007 at 19:42 I agree with Mr. Pipes, there is a great risk with these 'talks'. When people realize that it's not just the UN declaration of the Jewish State of Israel that fuels the controversey; then ,and only then, will everyone realize that this is not just about creating the state of Palestine. The 'Brotherhood" was created by an Arab American in the 1920's with the expressed goal of eliminating Western culture (or the lack of it - depending on your point of view). That 'Brotherhood' has evolved into Al Queada (spell it the way you like) and the terrorists we face today. The UN declaration of the Jewish State of Israel only added fuel to what was already a rather large and growing fire. Far too many people believe that peace in the Middle East is dependant upon resolving this issue and that the only way to do so is to create a Palestinian state - I doubt this will solve much of anything. I do agree that if Israel is a Jewish State than the Palestinians have a right to a state of their own. Even if it doesn't mean much of anything as far as making the people who live there prosper as they will still be dependant upon Israel in order to earn a living. And it appears that these workers are to Israel what the illegal Mexicans are to American businesses - cheap labor. I believe we will continue to see violence even if Palestine becomes an independent state and that this is far from the only place on earth we need to worry about. As big business needs to generate new customers and consumerism all over the developing world, hot spots emerge and wars, official and not, continue. If the developed world didn't have to depend on Arab oil - they couldn't afford to sneeze at us nevermind launch nuclear weapons. There is hope that if we can hold on until 2020 we can be independent of oil, regardless of where it's from and it's going to be quite dicey to see if we humans don't destroy ourselves and all life on earth before then. Arabs want to fight to control their society, their culture, their control over women and every aspect of daily life. They want to live as they have lived for thousands of years. This is in direct contrast to consumerism. If we could get big business out of what we call 3rd world countries we would be much better off and so would the residents of these countries, who were fine without our presence. Since we can't get big business out of the business of creating new consumers everywhere - we have to hope that Bush's confidence is being displayed for the purpose of setting a tone for the upcoming talks and that he really believes he can bring about peace between Israel & Palestine. Maybe he has an ace up his sleeve. I hope so. At least it's a new beginning. Who knows. Peace, anywhere in the middle east, would be most welcome.
