Turning Point is an UnderstatementReader comment on item: A Turning Point in the Arab-Israeli Conflict? Submitted by Barry Black (United States), May 18, 2011 at 10:32 Israel fears the appearance of non-violent demonstrations more than warfare because of world-wide politics. But more than warfare or demonstrations Israel has to fear president Obama's second term in office. Obama is smitten with the so-called Arab Spring and will use his political capital to force Israel to make concessions especially when it appears the UNGA will ratify the PA's petition for statehood and then a whole flux of nations will rush to recognize the "state of Palestine." It will be 1948 all over again! And there ain't much Israel can do about it. What happens next will determine the course of ME history. Will Palestine petition the UN to remove an occupying army? Will Palestine begin to gather heavy armament? Will the USA favor one side over the other? I suspect that Obama will lean towards Palestine because of his political capital for he believes that Israel and Palestine can co-exist at the 1967 borders with or without the settlements. Obama is a bit naive for there are forces building in the ME for the final war. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
