Mr MacKay, Because they are missing the main point unfortunately for usReader comment on item: Romney Channels George W. Bush's Middle East Policy Submitted by sara (United States), Oct 8, 2012 at 18:13 Yes, Obama may have been genuinely perplexed when referencing Egypt, wondering if they can be considered an ally, and Hillary's awe was genuine when she remarked after the LIbyan embassy murders that she 'didn't understand, we liberated Libya', helped them. Well folks, sorry to break the bad news, but we continue to repeat the same mistakes of the past decades. How many Afghanis are happy about what we have done for them in afghanistan and weakened the Taliban? And in Iraq, they are so very thankful and appreciative of the billions in blood and treasure. So why would we expect a different outcome? (Isn't that the definition of insanity?) The problem that they refuse to acknowledge is that these countries are ruled by Islamists. Mohamed fanatics who are united in their zeal to defend and spread Islam. It matters not to them if they are Libyan, Lebanese, Iraqi, Egyptian, Turkish, Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian, Somalian, Sudanese, Chechnyan, Kashmiri, Indian, Pakistani, etc etc etc. These are not separate nation-states to them with a western-like national identity. Nationalist identity is a foreign concept and in most cases their borders have been artificially imposed upon them by western powers with no consideration for tribes or sects (see Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon as prime examples of fractured peoples) Doesn't anyone notice the 'foreign jihadis; trailing in to Syria to help fight the jihad against the Assad regime, the same foreigners who helped Libyans defeat Quaddafi, Tunisian govt, etc. etc. They are one group- Islamists who want a global caliphate and their goal is Islamist governments and Islamic law, period the end. So there is no finite differentiation between these countries in their minds, they associate with their tribal clan identity and with Islam. It's pretty simple to them- perhaps the WH might seek more informed advisors. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
