defining element of us political cultureReader comment on item: What Is the Future of Conservatism in the Wake of the 2012 Election? Submitted by myth (Germany), Jan 8, 2013 at 01:40 The American conservative position is a defining element of US political culture. Here in Europe conservative standpoints have little in common with the American conservative flavor. The media reflect this distance. European media portray Fox like a propaganda outlet. European conservative politicians ignore the American conservative position. Consequently, the American conservatism is an isolated movement in the international arena. In similar fashion the engagement of US pop culture and entertainment in progressive politics is defining element of US entertainment culture. US pop culture transforms progressive politics into an international movement. Entertainment content produced in Europe is small compared to US media production. The stardom of European actors and singers is limited compared to American stars. The political leverage of pop culture in Europe is too small to have an impact. The downstream-from-culture argument adds to the attractivity of the progressive movement. You want to be part of a big popular movement? You want to sing along with popular artists like Al Green or BB King? The suggested vote is democrat of course. There is a deeper mechanism in place. Pop culture, a common preference, suggests an emotional bond, at least similarity, between progressive candidates and their electorate.
