That's only half the story

Hold on--what about Iraq? Don't forget the US and the West armed up Iraq before Saddam turned against them. And the US armed up the Shah's Iran (I think much of the current functioning Iranian airforce is based on US planes); and then there's South America, Pakistan ... I think the reality is: just do something--it may work, it may backfire. Soviets were the same.
