Islamists in Syria

The common narrative (espoused by Stephens) is that the uprising was initially secular.

What's for sure is that long before we heard about jihadists flocking to Syria, incidental footage of rockets fired by the 'rebels' was accompanied by calls of "Allahu Akbar' and I recall seeing a Syrian woman, presented as a typical civilian responding to Syrian shelling with the words "it won't help him (assad) because god is great and muhammed is his messenger'.

Do you, Daniel, believe that the uprising only developed an Islamist nature because of Assad's brutality?
