We should listen to the Islamists and take them seriously. They say the West is degenerate and materialistic. I discovered this myself. After years of watching tv I arrived at the analysis that tv was either dead bodies or utter nonsense. In the face of this revelation I did not convert to Islam. I took the easy road and ditched my tv in 2000. First time after that decision I watched tv for hours on end was in September 2001. The Islamists provided me with the well established content of dead bodies coming live from New York city. I fear the Right is as responsible as the Left for our weak cultural position toward the Islamists. What multiculturalism is to Left, is materialism and globalization to the Right. Noculturalism one could say. Who needs citizens when we all can be consumers. Who needs a civilization when already have the economy. Why care who somebody is, what he thinks, what he does, so long as he pays in hard currency? They over-use their slogan "Free Market" to the extent that the word "free" has lost all its meaning. It's all about individualism so long as no individual sticks his head out like Rushdie. Let me quote Gil Scott-Heron from his song "B-movie". He wrote some lines in an entirely different context which I find suitable:
