Tovey: Hit/Beat or Strike and Lisan al-'ArabReader comment on item: The Rushdie Fatwa 25 Years Later Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Aug 16, 2022 at 08:26 Here is a link to Ibn Manzur's Lisan al-'Arab and the root D-R-B or ض-ر-ب or ضرب (Hit/Beat): https://www.islamweb.net/ar/library/index.php?page=bookcontents&idfrom=4821&idto=4821&bk_no=122&ID=4829 islamweb translates the word ضرب as "hitting" Check also this link to Ibn Manzur's explanation of the root خ-ب-ط خبط يخبط or Kh-B-T or "to strike" and notice that Islamweb translates it as: "knock" and for sure not D-R-B. Here is the link https://islamweb.net/ar/library/index.php?page=bookcontents&ID=2030&bk_no=122&idfrom=2028&idto=2028 Notice that Ibn Manzur also wrote: فضربتها ضرتها بمخبط فأسقطت جنينا ; المخبط ، بالكسر : العصا التي يخبط بها الشجر Or: And the other wife (of their common husband) did beat/hit her or Darabatha (Root DRB) with a Makhbat and she sustained a miscarriage and lost the fetus (and then he explains the meaning of the word Makhbat) and it means the stick that is used to Yakhbat (strike) a tree. It is very clear that Ibn Manzur in a subtle way is explaining that D-R-B is to hit/beat and Kh-B-T is to strike I hope the above helps Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
