The Obligation of American Exceptionalism.Reader comment on item: Criticisms of the U.S.-led Air Campaign against ISIS Submitted by EthanP (United States), Sep 28, 2014 at 16:32 I don't often disagree with Mr. Pipes. I must in this case. The fact that his reasons are correct does not give the USA license to abdicate our responsibility. Much of the mess in the region is due to our misguided efforts at nation building and our totally naive efforts at installing democracy where none has ever existed. Perhaps more importantly we have yet another genocide in the making. The threat by Muslim extreamists to the non Muslim populations in the region is not something we can ignore. We have ignored it all too many times in the past. So whether this is Bush's fault as the left insists, or Obama's fault as the right does, we helped create this mess and we owe it to the innocents to fix it. I believe Mr. Pipes agrees with me that the USA IS an exceptional nation. Built upon ideals not always lived up to but always to be reached for. We are witnessing an ethnic cleansing from one end of the Arab world to the other. We must not just sit by. It's too late for that. This is a war of civilizations. This like the war against fascism and the Cold War have stakes too high to lose. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate.
