prison conversionsReader comment on item: Converts to Terrorism Submitted by festine (United States), Dec 6, 2005 at 16:06 Your article highlights a very valid point. I would also speculate that many Islamic conversions occur in prisons. Many prison inmates are disaffected losers with a hatred of the outside society; who embrace the culture of victimhood; and already have demonstrated their ability to rationalize acts of violence. These people, it would seem, may be more likely to become Islamofacist after conversion to Islam. There are fifty states, and each state runs its own prison system autonomous of the others. The federal government manages its system. Perhaps it is time for the Dept of Homeland Security, or other capable federal agency to start seriously paying attention to what is happening in the prisons. Some suggestions: 1)Serious pre-employment background checks for Muslim clerics. Any sign of overt or latent Islamism should preclude employment. 2) Serious surveillance of a cleric's activities in the prison. Any sign that they are preaching Islamofacism should bring swift dismissal. If they are actually advocating violence at any level, criminal charges should follow. 3) Requiring prisons to notify the appropriate federal agency of the names of all converts and practicing muslims therein. Upon release, such names should be on all appropriate watch lists used at airports or other sensitive locations. They should be available to all federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. These steps are simple, and will be one more tool in the continuing war in which identification of the enemy is the most pressing task. Remember, Richard Reid (shoe bomber) was just a small time punk. He became a Muslim in prison because the food was better. He didn't initially intend to become a practicing terrorist. But it turned out that way because people like him are great potential recruits for the Islamofacist organizations. It was great fortune that alert passengers and attendants prevented what would have been a horrible loss of life. If he was on a no fly list, we wouldn't have come dangerously close to such a disaster. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
