Are republicans reliable friends ?Reader comment on item: Israel and Congressional Democrats Submitted by Lars Nielsen (Denmark), Nov 1, 2010 at 18:58 Mr. Pipes has very clearly demonstrated, that democrats are not so devoted to unlimited support of Israel. But does that prove, that republicans are more reliable friends of Israel than democrats ? I think not. The problems with republicans are in my view twofold. They have run down US economy, and thus diminished US influence in the world. And they seem unwilling to do something to rebuild american economic strength. Therefore, USA is now a weaker friend of Israel as before. Secondly, it seems as if republicans have not defined, why USA should support Israel. They therefore only support Israel with their hearts and not with their brains. This makes republican support much less reliable as democrat support, because You will never know, what will happen, if republicans suddenly realise, that unlimited american support to Israel is not a free lunch, but there may be a prize to be paid in terms of increasing islamist power in the Middle East leading to oil boycot, attack on american property in the Middle East and other unpleasancies. In contrast, democrats seem to have realised this, and therefore will be much more reliable, when they announce what policies, they will follow in the Middle East, including which kind of support, they will give Israel and to what prize. I should mention, I am not an US citizen, I have no personal connections to the two parties, but in general, I should warn anybody to believe in politicians, which react from emotional in stead of rational arguments, and to me, the republican party seems to be a party, which has for long time reacted, as if they are immune to any kind of rational thinking.
