yes; existential crisis

I thoroughly agree with this comment on Dr Pipes' views; islam faces an existential crisis; put briefly it cannot face the light of reason which is of necessity brought to bear upon it by contact with the western world - it must conquer or die.

2 interesting comments I have encountered recently of an encouraging nature :

1/'Prior to Khomeni, Islam in Iran was a sick cow; Khomeni put a gun to its head and shot it dead'; Iran is an advanced country in many ways,and my Iranian friends present to me a society which has little respect for islam - which is imploding, as many people seek more satisfactory answers to life; islam has little to offer besides rules and hatred.

2/ A Turkish informant tells me that Mr Erdogan is a very clever politician who probably doesn't ahve much real attachment to the islamic ways; as in iran, he suggests, the people have scant affection for islam, but they are keen on short term progress, and Mr Erdogan seems to have a way satisfying popular demand.
