Better to pay the piper

Islam is the aggressor. Not economically speaking. The modern economies of the world are encroaching upon Islamic sensitivities. However, Islam IS super sensitive. Totalitarian systems tend to be this way, like North Korea. Islam is not isolated and is constantly lashing out.

When faced with aggression, it is generally best to confront sooner rather than later. It can be argued that Islamic aggression will just fade over time. However, the clock is ticking. It is only a matter of time before one of these Islamic nationalist groups obtains and deploys an effective weapon of mass destruction. I argue that it is much prefered to wage a large conventional war (or wars) instead.

I do not believe that the 'West' has the political will to do so. The initial backlash is so easy to see that would be much too easy to put it off, again and again. Just look at what the invasion of Iraq started. Imagine if a step by step process was begun as will most likely eventually become necessary. The war would become much larger than what was in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007. However, I still believe that this would be much smaller than what the ultimate outcome will be if we continue to put off the confrontation. You are correct: Modern techonology changes everything. WMD will be used unless we take more forceful action.
