Alternative Proposal, Dr. PipesReader comment on item: What's the Goal in Libya? Submitted by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi (United Kingdom), Jun 17, 2011 at 20:49 Dr. Pipes: How about just encouraging NATO to step up its efforts to ' finish the job', get rid of Qaddafi, and make it clear to the Transition Council that any Islamist aggression emanating from Libya in the future will be met with severe retaliation? Your scenario of assisting whichever Libya is the better of the two seems unrealistic: supposing it turns out to be Qaddafi's Tripolitania and Fezzan, do you really think he would want to accept any Western support to regain control over the whole country? Even so, given his brutal tactics, I have serious moral reservations over providing any help for his regime to acquire territory. Don't you?

I am not proposing help for Qaddafi to stay in power, just stopping short of overthrowing him. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (37) on this item
