My dear ShishirReader comment on item: L'Institut d'Égypte – In Memoriam Submitted by Debanjan Banerjee (India), Feb 2, 2012 at 02:48 Shishir : Anyway this Kinzer fellow also was a critic of Cold War fought by America and as recently as January was making apologies for Castro run Cuba! Therefore a communist sympathizer My Answer : So anyone makes a statement or two against the cold war policies of the USA is a communist sympathizer by your logic !!! Pat Buchanan opposed American war movements in Lebanon in the 1980-s which according to him had nothing to do with cold war and ultimately led to the birth of Hezbollah. So do you classify Pat Buchanan as a communist sympathizer also ? Even none of the prominent neo-cons have ever done anything against Castro when they were on power , so according to your logic Bush and his neo-cons are also communist sympathizers. This is what happens to simplistic worldviews. Shishir : The Shah's Iran was strong compared to Baathist Iraq. My Answer : You are conveniently forgetting that the Shah's Iran was an American puppet regime and the Baathist Iraq was a Soviet ally. So how would the USA support a strong pro-Soviet regime over their own ally ? Think about this Saddam did not attack the Shah simply because he knew that the Americans will not allow him to do so. The Islamic republic unlike the Shah regime did not harbor any Arab territorial claim moreover it stopped all supports for the secular Kurdish irregulars fighting against the Baathist regime in Iraq. So there was no need for Saddam to attack the Islamic republic until and unless there was outside provocation which in this case was for the Americans. Shishir : Actually a persons pro Soviets do matter a great deal when he offers opinions regarding pro Soviet agitators My Answer : Can you clearly show me some of those opinions of Stephen Kinzer whereby he is expressing pro-Soviet views ? I need factual proof. ShishirMossadegh was aligned with the Tudeh party which was communist and openly pro Soviet. He instittued collectivist schemes such as abolishment of private farms and government ownership of land. My Answer : Ok now if I say to you that similar things were done in the USA by the Eisenhower regime whereby Pres. Ike publicly castigated the military-industrial complex. Now Eisenhower was contemporary of Mossadegh. So by your own perverted and twisted logic , Eisenhower is also a communist and pro-Soviet sympathizer , right ? Can you please show me five overwhelmingly pro-communist and pro-Tudeh party comments from Mossadegh so that we can conclude that Mossadegh had communist sympathies ? However I am still waiting for your answer that whether the West had any right to politically overthrow a regime in Iran which just wanted a more equitable share of their national wealth ? Please provide me a logical answer, I also want to know why do you think the British saved Iran from USSR ? You need to provide me a proof for it. Another point here is that if you say that the West succeeded the communist influence in Iran then they should be happy that what replaced Shah was not a communist regime. So they should be happy that they were able to save Iran from communism. Instead we see the West try their everything to topple the Islamic republic so in my view your viewpoint that the West wanted to save Iran from Communism is hypocritical. West wanted a pilant and dependent Iran which both Mossadegh and Imam Khomeini did not want. That is why the West overthrew the first and trying desperately to overthrow the second. If the West is was so concerned about saving Iran from Communism then why do they support the Anarchist MEK now ? I think it is time for people like you to come up with a clear logical answer about whether the West has any moral right to interfere in the Iranian affairs and why the West is not ready to accept Iran as a sovereign power which can have different opinion on how people should be governed and what their culture should be. Shishir : Yours is an utterly nonsensical pipe dream. My Answer : Herzl's dream also destroyed and uprooted millions of Christians and Muslims as well as Jews from their homelands. I at least want a nation whereby people from all faiths can live together and work together whereby their common Abrahamic heritage is given priority rather than sectarian differences. I thank you for calling me a dreamer. After all only a human being can dream and it is the proof of me being a human being that I dream. I believe people in this strife-torn World need more and more people like me who can think about creating a new identity for human beings beyond their ethnic prejudices and based upon common humanity. Herzl only thought in terms of ethnic bias and prejudices. Thereby you should regard me in higher esteem as a visionary than Herzl who never cared to think about non-Jews. Can you even dare to think like me ? Do you have the heart to do this ? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
