Hello There is NO Santa Claus,

Thank you for your clarification on why you spell Obama as "O'bama". What you have said makes good sense to me. I had assumed that you had just made a simple spelling mistake, but now I fully understand that you have a reason for doing as you do. You will forgive me for having poked a bit of fun at you, since I did it in ignorance of the logic behind your novel spelling.

What you have said about the election of Obama, however, seems to me to be nearly as valid in virtually every presidential election in the rough and tumble history of such events in this great land of "democracy". Having done quite a fair amount of research and reading on American politics, it is very difficult for me to single out an American presidential election, with few exceptions, that has not been tainted to a greater or lesser extent (usually greater) by some sort of behind-the-scenes chicanery and manipulation. We may boast of more than 200 years of rule by the people as they state their will in "free elections", but to my mind the entire process is usually a thinly disguised sham which any semi-intelligent person ought to be able to recognize for the fraud that it is. Having said this, however, I still feel that the American system, with all of its only-too-evident warts and wrinkles, is still preferable to a dictatorship, or theocracy of religious zealots, etc.

Now we find ourselves in the midst of our every-four-years mudslinging fest of claims and counterclaims, lies and counterlies, misrepresentations and exaggerations, by self-appointed would-be presidential aspirants. Why people contribute so much as two cents to the campaigns of these thoroughly depressing persons is more than I will ever understand. Whatever the merits or demerits of our current president may be, whoever the Republicans finally select once all the dust has settled, will, in my opinion, simply be the designated "sacrificial lamb" on the altar of American politics, since an Obama victory is all but assured. Compared to the extremely weak roster of Republican candidates, Obama at least looks presidential.

Kind regards,

NEIL CAMERON / 6443
