American Foreign Legion ...Reader comment on item: Further Thoughts on Not Intervening in Syria Submitted by ben h (United States), Jun 14, 2012 at 12:54 I can't think of anything more foolish than creating an 'American' foreign legion. The risk to our liberty from this kind of organization are too massive. A foreign legion would be a mercenary force with allegiance to its paymasters not to the American People and the Constitution (which you would assume our citizen army are primarily concerned with defending). This mercenary force would be the perfect sort of force for the government to use against the American people - you know, in 'emergencies' - considering that they would on the side of the military as an institution and the governmental class as a paymaster. Sorry to make this incidental criticism as I agree with your point that we should stay out of Syria. Its amazing that just 10 years after 9/11 so many commentators who saw suicide bombing as a terrorist act that can not be condoned are now supporting factions that use this tactic (the opposition in Syria and our 'allies' in Libya). One of the morally vacant ideas going around after 9/11 was that 'one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.' While this idea came from the left it has been taken up by too many folks on the right who want to support a certain faction in spite of the tactics of its leading members. Its good to see you have not fallen into this trap Daniel. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
