I agree with you that a foreign legion would muddle the political landscape and impact the ability of the US to intervene politically when in her interest. There remains however the perpetual dilemma of taking action to save innocent lives that are barbarically taken vs. preserving and protecting US interests and thus, protection of her own citizens. If we make an analogy to a microcosm of a family for example, a mother protecting her children will by necessity be forced to do so as a priority whether at the expense of someone else's children or not. That is our genetic imperative, Ugly and inhumane as it may seem, altruism in nature only exists to further a genetic goal, not to willingly do damage to oneself.
