We Need You to Interpret Islamic HistoryReader comment on item: How Terrorism Harms Radical Islam Submitted by Richard H. Shulman (United States), Jan 10, 2015 at 10:55 Dr. Pipes, This article is an example of your explaining Radical Islamic violence to a West that is confused about it. You specialized in Islamic history. Most Westerners are confused about Islamic history. They don't know what it was like at its start, what its basic principles are, what got modified in the Medieval period, that the modifications later got eroded, whether the Islamists have an Islamic view or their own view, how much sympathy most Muslims have for Radical positions and actions, what proportion of Muslims in the West are Muslims in name only, and whether radicalized Muslim youth come from families only nominally Muslilms, fairly religious, or very devout. Your organization could play a useful role in explaining some of those questions. Richard Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. The Middle East Forum and I are doing our best to explain this complex set of issues and offer policies to handle them. Reader comments (55) on this item
