Does Hollande understand freedom better than Obama?Reader comment on item: How Terrorism Harms Radical Islam Submitted by Richard Stoecker (United States), Jan 11, 2015 at 13:02 The mindless violence of terrorism--especially when it strikes at values so deeply-held and basic in western democracy as free speech as it did in the murder of cartoonists in Paris, and freedom of religion in the killing of Jews because they were Jews, will lead to the self-destruction of radical Islam. The French at this moment appear to be ahead of America government leaders, since French President Hollande said his country is now at war with radical Islam, a term President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have meticulously avoided. American government reactions, as well as those of our media, raise serious questions. Why is Holder identifying the terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo as the work of "lone wolf" types when it is so clear at least one of the murderers received military training from organized Islamists? The Huffington Post, to its credit, published some Charlie Hebdo cartoons, but there is no reason why the cartoons could not be displayed in print media throughout the west. They don't make Democrats like they used to. What would Presidents Truman or Kennedy do? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Daniel Pipes replies: You apparently confused the French prime minister, who said that about radical Islam (see http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2001/12/calling-islamism-the-enemy#Valls) with the president.
