Jefferson's view of islam

I have to admit that I didn't hear all of Obama's speech but I heard that he said Jefferson owned a Quran. I believe the reason he had one was because he wanted to learn more about Islam, and more specifically why the muslim Barbary pirates considered it in line with their religious beliefs to take American hostages, not because Jefferson was a muslim as Obama might have been trying to lead people to believe.
